County boundaries were extracted from the 1992 TIGER Line files produced by the US Bureau of Census
Purpose:
The digitized county boundaries data can be used as a digital layer in various studies. (ie soils, landuse, wells)
Supplemental Information: Data has been re-projected to Stateplane, NAD83 for use in the Platte River Cooperative Hydrology Study (COHYST).

The initial sources used to create the Census TIGER data base were the USGS 1:100,000-scale Digital Line Graph (DLG), USGS 1:24,000 -scale quadrangles, and the Census Bureau's GBF/DIME-Files. The DLG coverage is extensive, albeit of variable currency, and comprises most of the rural, small city, and suburban area of the TIGER/Line files. GBF/DIME-File coverage area were updated through 1987 with manual translation of features from the most recent aerial photography available to the Census Bureau. Its files and maps are designed to show only the relative positions of elements. For features based on the DLG files, the positional exactness of the information is no greater than the established National Map Accuracy standards for 1:100,000 -scale maps the USGS (approximately +/- 167 feet); thus, it is not suitable fro high precision measurement applications such as engineering problems, property transfers, or other uses that might require highly accurate measurements of the earth's surface.

This data is in single precision format. After the data was put in ARC/INFO Export format, we ran ult2dos and compressed our data using DOS PKZIP and ZIP2EXE. We did this thinking most of our users would be DOS based ARCVIEW. However, upon request we will output it to another format if you are not able to use this one.

File_Decompression_Technique:
Download the file and for example we called it county. From a dos prompt add the file extension .exe thus calling it county.exe Type in county and it will automatically decompress for you (it needs the extension .exe for this process). If you wish to enter this data into a DOS environment you are ready. If you wish to enter this data into a unix environment you need to run a dos or unix program to convert it from dos to unix. If you do not have the unix version of dos2ult the dos version can be found at our web site url http://www.nrc.state.ne.us under the databank icon and the useful programs option. If you do not have access to a DOS environment then please leave a request at our web site under the databank option and we will export the data in a format you can use.
