Description of stream coring performed in 2000 by COHYST
Modelers
Groundwater modeling frequently requires estimation of
conductance, a parameter that describes the rate of
interaction between surface water features and the
groundwater system (McDonald and Harbaugh, 1988). For the
COHYST Study, streambed conductance is based on estimates
of the hydrogeologic properties and extent of streambed
deposits; estimates are used because neither precise
property values, nor their extent, are likely to be known.
These parameters can be difficult to estimate with any
degree of certainty; therefore, COHYST modelers implemented
a program to sample and test cores of streambed deposits
from the Platte River, and some tributaries, within the
COHYST area. The sampling and testing program was conducted
during May through September 2000. More information about

Streambed coring was performed by driving a section of PVC
pipe (5 feet long x 4.5 inches outside diameter) into the
streambed. Streambed sediment samples were extracted in
6-inch increments from the PVC pipe using a hand auger
equipped with a sand-type retrieval barrel. After each
sample was retrieved, the PVC pipe was advanced an
additional 6 inches into the streambed, and another sample
of streambed sediment was removed. This process of coring
and auger sampling was repeated until the PVC pipe could
not be driven deeper without submerging the upper end of
the pipe below the stream water surface. For
streambeds with coarse-grained sediments, the maximum
sampling depth was 48 inches. The sampling depth of
coarse-grained sediments was limited since retrieval of
samples below the PVC pipe could not be obtained without
causing lateral sloughing. For streambeds with fine-grained
sediments, including cohesive silts and clays, samples
could usually be obtained from depths below the PVC pipe
core. This is possible because cohesive sediments maintain
competency for a short period of time, even when adjacent
sediments are removed. The auger hole created in
fine-grained sediments remains open, even without support
of the PVC pipe. The maximum sample depth for fine-grained
sediments was 63 inches.
A geologist logged all sediments. The geologic log included
observations of color, grain size, sorting, composition,
and roundness/angularity (where such could be determined).
Auxiliary observations included, presence of organics,
temperature, and hydraulic gradient between the stream
water surface and groundwater in the cored hole. A GPS
(global positioning) unit was used to determine the
location of each sample site. Locations were recorded as
either UTM or geographic (latitude/longitude) coordinates.
The GPS unit did not report ground elevation. Users of the
site location data must be aware that the GPS receivers
used are small hand-held units equipped with either an
internal antenna, or a short external antenna. Recorded
locations may be off as much as (40 feet in each
measurement from the true location. COHYST
groundwater modelers may use grain-size profiles, produced
from the described coring work, to guide the estimation of
relative streambed conductance.
